Church Baseball
Welcome to the home page of FIRST METHODIST BASEBALL, an outreach program of
the First United Methodist Church, Fort Smith, Arkansas since 1955. Under the
direction and guidance of Dr. Ted Skokos, for whom Skokos Field is named, First
Methodist began what became the Fort Smith
Church Baseball League (FSCBL) with
four teams playing at Lions Club Park (now known as Forsgren Field). The first
four coaches were Dr. Skokos, Robert Jones, Jr., Delmar Edwards, and Lee Dunham.
In 1957, two additional churches joined us to begin FSCBL. Our youth minister,
Herschel McClurkin, served as the first league commissioner in 1958.
From that first season with 69 players, FSCBL has grown into a program serving over 80 teams and 1100 players.
Here is a breakdown of the leagues and the eligible ages, subject to change and the availability of players to field a First Methodist team:
- Starter: Players must be four (4) by August 15th of the current year, and may not be five (5) on or before August 15th of current year.
- Junior Pee-Wee: Players must be at least five (5) years of age on or before August 15th of the current year and may not be six (6) years of age on or before August 15th of the current year.
- Pee-Wee: Must be at least five (5) years old on or before August 15th of the current year and may not be seven (7) years old before May 1st of the current year.
- Super Pee-Wee: May not be nine (9) years old before May 1st of the current year. The team roster cannot consist of more than 4 players who turn eight (8) years of age before May 1st of the current year.
- Bambino: May not be nine (9) years old before May 1st of the current year.
- Pony - First Year and Second Year: May not be eleven (11) years old before May 1st of the current year.
- Midget: May not be thirteen (13) years old before May 1st of the current year.
- Prep League: Must be thirteen (13) years old by August 1st of the current year and may not be fourteen 14 before May 1st of current year.
- Babe Ruth: May not be sixteen (16) years old before May 1 of the current year.
