Church Conference Approves Adoption of Faith UMC
Dear Church Family,
On Sunday, August 10, we reached a milestone in our season of prayer and discernment. At the Church Conference, the congregation of First United Methodist Church voted to approve the adoption of Faith United Methodist Church by a vote of 182–20.
We welcome our new family members and look forward to writing the next chapter of God’s work with us, both downtown and on the east side of town. I give thanks for the sacrificial heart of the Faith UMC family and for the gift of uniting our ministries for the sake of the Gospel. God has called us to serve with compassion, to welcome all with open hearts and minds, and to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. Now, as one church in two places, downtown and east, we pray that God will stir in us the creativity and vision we will need.
I am grateful for the way this congregation prayed, shared, and listened to one another throughout the discernment period. Thank you to all the serving disciples who volunteered their time and energy in so many ways, leading up to yesterday. I also thank our volunteers and staff for the excellence in logistics on Sunday, which allowed the focus to remain on the Spirit’s leading.
I give thanks for the people of Fort Smith First United Methodist Church and Faith United Methodist Church, for our faithful leaders, and for the support of Bishop Laura Merrill, District Superintendent Rev. Roy Beth Kelley, and the Arkansas Conference leadership.
I trust that God will use our shared gifts to do far more than we can ask or imagine. This is a moment to celebrate and also a moment to recommit. Now the real work begins as we step forward with the East Campus of FSFUMC, ready to serve neighbors, welcome all, and grow disciples of Jesus Christ. God is doing a new thing. Let us join Jesus in this new adventure.

LATEST UPDATES:
Church Conference Vote on Adoption MergerSunday, August 10 | Immediately following worship | The Great Hall
Presiding: Rev. Roy Beth Kelley, Northwest District Superintendent What is happening on August 10?
We will hold a Church Conference to vote on the proposed Adoption Merger between Fort Smith FUMC and Faith United Methodist Church. This vote would formally approve the merger, establishing the site at 2901 Massard Road as the East Campus of FSFUMC for the purpose of expanding our mission and ministry in the River Valley. ──────────────────────────────────────────── When and where is the Church Conference?
Who is eligible to vote? This will be a Church Conference, which means that all professing members of FSFUMC who are present may vote. According to the Book of Discipline 248: “To encourage broader participation by members of the church, the charge conference may be convened as the church conference, extending the vote to all professing members of the local church present at such meetings.” Professing members are those who joined the church through confirmation or as adults by profession of faith or transfer from another congregation. As this session of the Church Conference is an official meeting being operated under the supervision of the district superintendent using the Book of Discipline of the UMC, we are required to follow denominational policies and procedures. In this situation, the Church Conference held in this manner requires professing members to be present at the meeting to vote. We will be using ballots, so please come to the registration desk in the Fireside Room to register and obtain a ballot before going to the Great Hall. Not sure if you’re listed as a professing member? Contact Gail Oakes in the church office at [email protected] or call 479-782-5068. ──────────────────────────────────────────── What exactly will we be voting on? To adopt Faith UMC, we will be voting to approve a formal resolution of merger (in accordance with Book of Discipline 2546) that would:
Earlier on Sunday August 10, the membership of Faith UMC will be voting on the identical resolution. You can read the full draft resolution below. ──────────────────────────────────────────── Why are we doing this? This proposed merger flows from the mission statement of the UMC: To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of The World. Along with the Arkansas Conference’s vision to: Follow Jesus, Love People, and Share Grace This ministry opportunity is rooted in our vision to grow deeper in faith, extend wider in service, and reach new people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. This adoption merger allows us to repurpose a well-maintained and strategically located existing United Methodist facility, honor the legacy of Faith UMC, and launch a new expression of our church for neighbors across town. This is not just about property… It is about people, purpose, and the future. ──────────────────────────────────────────── How will this second campus launch be funded? This opportunity is being made possible through generous support:
──────────────────────────────────────────── If you have questions before the vote, please contact Rev. Blake at [email protected], or our Executive Council at [email protected]. Let’s continue to pray, prepare, and step faithfully into the future God is shaping for our church and our River Valley Community. August 04, 2025July 23, 2025 |

$100k Conference Grant Strengthens Opportunity for Second Campus
Our Executive Council is excited to share an important update in our discernment process. Bishop Merrill and the Extended Cabinet of the Arkansas Conference of the UMC, which oversees new church starts and revitalization efforts, have approved a $100,000 grant to support Fort Smith First UMC’s potential adoption of Faith UMC as a second campus, if we decide to move forward on this opportunity.
This grant comes from the “New Places for New People” fund and will be released following an affirmative vote by both congregations through Church Conferences. In the grant letter, District Superintendent Roy Beth Kelley writes, “We applaud your visionary leadership and willingness to step out in faith to try a new thing in our Conference for the sake of sharing God’s love with new people in new ways.”
This funding, combined with a $250,000 lead pledge from one of our members, puts us in a very strong financial position if we choose to move ahead.
Our larger purpose remains the same. This opportunity is about reaching new people with the love of Christ and creating a welcoming, grace-filled church home in east Fort Smith.
We are currently finalizing materials in preparation to request a Church Conference later this summer, likely in July. In the meantime, please continue to pray for this process, for the people of Faith UMC, and for the people in east Fort Smith who are searching for a church home filled with grace.
You can email the FUMC Executive Council at [email protected] with any questions or if you would like to learn more about participating in one of the planning teams.

A Remarkable $250,000 Pledge During our Season of Discernment
Dear First United Methodist Church Family,
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ!
I write today with extraordinary news and deep gratitude.
As you know, our congregation is in a season of prayerful discernment about the potential adoption of Faith United Methodist Church as a second campus of Fort Smith First UMC. This opportunity has stirred hope, vision, and conversation across our church, and now it has also inspired a powerful act of generosity.
Following May’s Administrative Board meeting, a member of our church has made an anonymous pledge of $250,000 toward launching a new campus in east Fort Smith, should the church decide to move forward in this adoption endeavor. This generous pledge is an expression of deep faith and commitment to our mission, and it comes with one request from the donor: that our focus remain on reaching new people for Christ.
The pledge is intended to help fund key elements of the project: building updates to create a welcoming space, worship and technology upgrades to support a new worship service, outreach and marketing to connect with the community, and early ministry development that will lay the groundwork for vibrant spiritual life.
The donor shared:
“I find it very interesting that it was almost exactly a century ago that our church leaders decided to step out in faith and build the sanctuary on a new campus at 15th and B Street, which led to growth beyond what I’m sure they could have envisioned: an Education Building, Roebuck Chapel, Family Life Center, Weekday School, Welcome / Children’s / Youth building, etc. Like those leaders, I believe that we are receiving a once-in-a-generation calling that will impact our church for the next hundred-plus years and bring about growth beyond anything that we could envision - both downtown and on the east side.”
We are currently preparing a grant request to the Arkansas Conference Trustees to support this opportunity, and we are working closely with our leadership teams to ensure every step is covered in prayer, planning, and transparency. Once we have clarity on potential conference funding, we will finalize the necessary information and request that our District Superintendent authorize a churchwide vote in a duly called church conference. I wish to be clear: the decision has not yet been made, and your prayers, input, and discernment continue to help guide the way.
But today, we pause to give thanks.
This remarkable pledge is a sign of hope, inviting each of us to imagine what could be possible. As plans unfold, there may be opportunities for others to join in support of this mission. Whether through prayer, presence, service, or giving, your participation is an impactful witness to what God is doing through our congregation.
We are grateful for every prayer offered, every question asked, every dollar given, and every step forward taken in faith. May this remarkable pledge encourage all of us to listen for God’s call and imagine the future God is preparing for our church and our city.

May 2025 Administration Board Report: ADOPTION DISCERNMENT PROCESS UPDATE
Ad Board Chair Dalton Person and Pastor Blake Bradford
This past Sunday, our Administrative Board gathered for a Spirit-filled meeting filled with hope, excitement, and faithful discernment. We’re writing together to share some key highlights, especially two important decisions related to the potential adoption of Faith UMC as a second campus of Fort Smith First UMC.
Over the past few months, our church has been deeply engaged in a prayerful and thoughtful process. The board first heard about the possibility of adoption back in February. Since then, we’ve held two Town Halls, conducted due diligence through key committees, and joined together in 40 days of prayer using our Breakthrough Prayer. These steps have been marked by care, humility, countless hours of research, and trust in the Spirit’s leading.
At Sunday’s meeting, we asked the big question: “Is Fort Smith First UMC called to adopt Faith UMC and launch a second campus?”
Discerning a calling is never just about strategy or possibility. It’s also about listening for God’s leading and asking where the Spirit is nudging us to go next. Through weeks of prayer, careful listening and discernment, and conversations across our church family, a sense of shared purpose began to take shape. After thoughtful discussion, the board’s answer to this question of calling was a clear and unanimous “yes.” There was strong agreement that this is a generational opportunity to reach new people for Christ and expand our mission to the east side of the River Valley.
That affirmation led to 2 next steps: First, we are now ready to submit our working cost estimates to the Arkansas Conference to get a clearer picture of what kind of connectional grant support might be available. This information, along with continued due diligence, will help us be prepared to make a congregational decision.
Second, the Ad Board considered how our congregation should make that decision. While others are involved in the ultimate outcome (including Faith UMC, the Cabinet, the Conference Trustees, and the District), our congregation’s part of the process was the choice between holding a Charge Conference (which the Book of Discipline describes as our Administrative Board) or a Church Conference. After discussion, the board unanimously agreed to request that our District Superintendent authorize a Church Conference, which would allow every professing member of Fort Smith First UMC to vote on this important step forward. Before scheduling that Church Conference, our leadership will continue gathering information and holding conversations, particularly with Arkansas Conference leaders and with Faith UMC. At this time, we anticipate that the District Superintendent will schedule the Church Conference within the next 30-60 days. Be on the lookout for additional details once a date is set for this important conference.
It is a joy to serve a church that listens well, prays deeply, and leads boldly.
With gratitude and hope,
Dalton and Blake

Take the “Readiness 360” Survey
Dear Church Family,
At First United Methodist Church, we are taking seriously our call to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. One of the ways we’re living into that calling is by discerning whether God is leading us to adopt Faith UMC as a second campus of our congregation.
This decision has deep spiritual, relational, and missional implications. As we prayerfully consider the possibility of adopting Faith UMC as a second campus of First United Methodist Church, we are asking every member and regular participant to take part in a brief, online survey called Readiness 360, which has been used around the country in thousands of congregations exploring new opportunities such as the one we are facing now. This survey is an important tool that will help us assess our congregation’s spiritual readiness for growth and new ministry. The Readiness 360 survey looks at four vital areas of congregational health: spiritual intensity, dynamic relationships, missional alignment, and cultural openness.
Your honest input will help us listen for God’s guidance, identify areas of strength and growth, and discern our readiness to partner with God in creating new places for new people. Participation is quick and easy—and completely confidential. The Arkansas Conference is covering the cost of this survey resource for us, and we need as many responses as possible to get a clear picture of where God is leading us.
Please take about 20 minutes this week to share your voice in this important season of discernment.
How to Take the Readiness 360 Survey:
1) Go to: http://app.readiness360.org/survey/login
2) Enter our church’s unique survey code: 9122864016
3) Complete the survey by April 7

● Pray the church can address injustice in our community
● Pray that we will see how our personal values align with God’s call to care for hurting people.

Pray for Clarity of Values
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ (Matthew 25:34-36)
● Pray the church can address injustice in our community
● Pray that we will see how our personal values align with God’s call to care for hurting people.
● Pray we can be open to how we use our resources to witness to God’s grace, share with the hungry in body and spirit, and be a blessing in the River Valley.
Tuesday, April 1 - Wednesday, April 2
Pray for a Spirit of Trust
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Matthew 25:34-36)
● Pray for people in both churches to put their trust in God during this discernment process and possible adoption.
● Pray for the leadership to continue to seek and follow God’s will.
● Pray that people in both churches faithfully follow God’s leading.

Praying for Discernment in the Adoption Process

These initial steps provide much for our leadership to research and study in the coming weeks as they prepare recommendations for our Administrative Board. Please keep our leadership in your prayers. As more information becomes available, they look forward to updating the congregation.

Breakthrough Prayer
God of boundless grace,
Lead our church into deeper faith and unity.
Lift our eyes beyond what is familiar
– beyond our walls, beyond downtown –
to see the whole River Valley as our calling in ministry.
Break through every barrier that hinders growth and vision.
Grant us wisdom and clarity as we discern the potential
of adopting another church and creating a new ministry eastward.
Make us bold in faith, humble in service,
and ready to step into the future you are shaping.
We trust you, God of new beginnings, and seek your will.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
our firm foundation and guiding light.
Amen.

Dear First UMC Family,
I want to share with you an important moment in the life of our church. Over the past month, our leadership has been prayerfully exploring the possibility of adopting Faith United Methodist Church into our congregation. Faith UMC, along with our District Superintendent, has asked us to consider this path, and we are seeking God’s guidance together.
This would not be a property purchase or a “two-point charge” but a true church adoption merger—bringing our two congregations together as one, with First UMC serving Fort Smith from both our downtown campus and a second campus to the east at the current Faith UMC location. Our current plans for this would not include any changes to our weekly worship schedule downtown.
While I have shared this with our Administrative Board, for many of you, this may be the first time you’re hearing about it. That’s why we are entering into a season of prayer and discernment, listening for God’s direction. We don’t take this step lightly—our goal is to be guided by the Holy Spirit, to seek wisdom, and to faithfully consider what this could mean for our mission and ministry. Meanwhile, our administrative committees, particularly our Finance Committee and Trustees, will be doing due diligence feasibility studies of Faith UMC’s facilities and finances. Please include these leaders in your prayers as well.
To help guide us in this process, we are asking every member of our church to join in a 40-day season of prayer. Above, you’ll find a short video sharing more about this time of discernment, and below is the Breakthrough Prayer we are inviting the entire congregation to pray daily.
As you pray, please also lift up the members of Faith UMC, who are walking their own path of discernment. This is a sacred and emotional journey for them as they consider their legacy and future. May we surround them with love, support, and prayer as they seek where God is leading.
We will continue to share more in the weeks ahead, and as always, I welcome your prayers, your thoughts, and any feedback you may have as we step forward in faith.
In Christ,
Blake
